Lantern Thief gameplay

18 seconds of play recorded in the browser, uncut and not sped up. This is how the game really looks.

What the clip shows

Run across the rooftops of a dark city and light the lanterns.

What you see in the clip

  • light as a resource and a checkpoint
  • rooftop runs with momentum
  • hand-built levels
  • full screen on phone and desktop

The clip runs 18 seconds of play and has no sound — the game itself does have sound. One round takes 10–20 minutes, so you see roughly as much as happens at the start.

How it plays

  1. 01

Run and jump across the rooftops, clearing the gaps between buildings.

  2. 02

Touch a lantern to light it. It reveals a piece of the map and saves your progress.

  3. 03

After a fall you return to the last lit lantern, so it pays to light every one on the way.

How it changes as you play

The dark takes away your view a few steps ahead, so you partly jump into the unknown. Every lit lantern reveals a piece of the route and becomes the place you return to after a fall. It is tempting to run on without lighting anything, because it is faster. That is exactly the moment the game punishes haste.

Who this game is for

For anyone who likes classic running and jumping but has no appetite for learning ten buttons. The controls are two moves, and the difficulty comes from how the rooftops are laid out, not from how many keys you press at once.

Scores and records

Lantern Thief does not send scores to the board yet, so its records stay empty. That is true of every game that does not call the klyo kit — we say so plainly instead of showing a board that will never fill up. The game plays normally; the score just stays on your screen.

Play Lantern Thief

Is Lantern Thief free?

Yes. Lantern Thief runs in your browser for free, with no account and nothing downloaded to your device.

Can I play Lantern Thief on a phone?

Yes. Lantern Thief works on phones and computers — you open the address and play, exactly as in the clip.

Is my score in Lantern Thief saved anywhere?

Not yet. This game does not report a score, so its board stays empty — we do not pretend otherwise.

Where does this recording come from?

From the same game you can play next to it. We record it automatically after every release, so the clip can never show an older version than the one on the page.
