How to become a tournament referee on Klyo

Open the Referees tab in tournaments, press “Become a referee”, choose games, languages and a country, describe yourself and save the profile. Organisers will see you on the referee board and invite you to their tournaments.

Before you start

  • A Klyo account with a nickname.
  • Knowledge of the rules of the game you want to referee: Makao, checkers, backgammon or dominoes.
  • A few sentences about yourself: which tournaments you refereed, which schools or clubs you play with and when you can run tournaments.

Step by step

  1. Open the referee board

In tournaments choose the Referees tab. The board lists referees from the best rated, with their games, languages, country and the number of tournaments run.

  2. Apply

Press Become a referee. Tick the games, choose up to six languages and a country, write a few sentences about yourself and press Save profile. The profile is on the board at once.

  3. Accept an invitation

When an organiser invites you, you get an email and the invitation appears under “Your matters” on the board. Press Accept. You can also answer “Looking for a referee” notices from schools and clubs.

  4. Answer notices

At the bottom of the referee board there are “Looking for a referee” notices from schools, clubs and organisers, with the game, the date and a description of the tournament. Press “Apply” on a notice for your game. The author sees the applications with your profile and reviews, and when they choose you, you get an email and an invitation to the tournament at once.

  5. Run the tournament

An accepted referee appears on the tournament page and on the players' certificates. During play you can hide any spectator chat message that spoils the fun or tips off the players. The server counts the match results.

  6. Collect reviews and XP

When the tournament ends, the players and the organiser give you one to five stars and a short review. The average rating and the number of tournaments run move you up the referee board. Every tournament you run gives you 60 XP towards your rank, and your name is on the players' certificates.

If something goes wrong

I do not see the game I want to referee

You can referee games that have tournaments. New games appear on the list in the referee profile when they get tournaments.

Someone gave me an unfair review

Only the players and the organiser of a tournament you ran can review, once per tournament. Write to us from the help pages and a person from Klyo will check it.

I get no invitations

Complete your description: write which tournaments you refereed and which schools or clubs you play with. Also apply yourself to “Looking for a referee” notices on the referee board; the author sees your profile and reviews.

I want to stop refereeing

Open your referee profile and press “Hide my profile”. You disappear from the board, and your reviews stay in case you come back.

The organiser withdrew the invitation

The organiser can change the referee until the tournament starts. The invitation then disappears from “Your matters”, and you can apply to other tournaments or answer more notices.
