How to play Minesweeper

    On a computer: The left mouse button uncovers a square, the right one places a flag. On a touchpad a two finger tap places a flag, on a Mac use Ctrl and click. Click a number with all its flags using the left, the right or both buttons at once to open its neighbours. On a keyboard: arrows, Space or Enter uncovers, F places a flag, R starts again.

You win when you uncover every square without a mine.

How to play Minesweeper

Your first move never hits a mine and always opens part of the board, so you always have somewhere to start. A 1 means exactly one of the eight squares around it hides a mine. Mark a square you know holds a mine with a flag. When a number has as many flags around it as it shows, tapping the number uncovers the rest of its neighbours at once.

Levels and the daily board

Easy is 9 by 9 squares with 10 mines, Medium is 16 by 16 with 40 mines, and Hard is 30 by 16 with 99 mines. On a phone held upright Hard turns to 16 by 30, so the squares stay big enough to tap. The daily board is the same for every player: the date picks it, and the start is already open.

Controls on a phone and a computer

On a phone a tap uncovers a square and a long press places a flag. The Flag button in the bar turns taps into flags. On a computer the left mouse button uncovers a square, the right one places a flag and the middle one opens the neighbours of a number. On a keyboard you move with the arrows, Space or Enter uncovers a square, F places a flag and R starts again.

Time, records and the leaderboard

The clock starts with your first move. The game keeps your best time for every level. Your leaderboard score grows with the level and drops with every second, so a fast game on the hard board scores the most.

Do I need to install anything

No. Minesweeper runs in the same browser tab you are reading now. There is no store download, no account and no e-mail to give. The game is free and stays free.
