Makao is the classic Polish card game where the first player to get rid of every card in their hand wins. It belongs to the same family as Crazy Eights and Mau-Mau, with a few sharper rules of its own.

About Makao

Here you play at a club table with a wooden rail and navy velvet cloth, against one, two or three computer rivals, or online against other Klyo players. A game usually takes a few minutes, and it runs in the browser on phones, tablets and computers with nothing to install.

Makao rules in short

You put a card on the pile in the same suit or the same rank as the top card, and you can play several cards of one rank at once. The queen goes on anything and anything goes on the queen. Twos and threes are battle cards: the next player draws two or three cards unless they answer with a two or a three of their own, and the penalties add up. The king of hearts and the king of spades make someone draw five, and the king of spades hits the player before you. A four makes the next player miss a turn, a jack demands a rank from five to ten, and an ace changes the suit. When nothing fits, you draw from the deck and may play that card straight away if it fits. With one card left, the game calls "Makao!" for you, so nobody catches you forgetting it.

How to play Makao against the computer

One tap on a card plays it. Cards that fit rise by themselves while the rest dim, so you see your options at a glance. A choice only appears when there really is one: how many cards to put down, which rank your jack demands, or which suit your ace calls. Your rivals Iris, Oscar and Nora come in three levels: gentle, clever and masters. Every move shows who did what. The card flies from that player's seat, a bubble such as "+3", "I want 7!" or "Makao!" pops up next to them, and a plaque by the pile shows the rule in force. On a computer the right side of the table lists the last moves and the left side shows your record.

Game modes

Learning mode walks you through the first game with a tip for every new rule. A quick game ends when the first player runs out of cards, while a full game plays on for every place. The daily deal gives everyone the same cards once a day, so you can compare results with friends and build a streak. Two to four players sit at the table, and an unfinished game is saved so you can come back to it.

Makao online

In online mode you sit down with other Klyo players. A server deals the cards, checks every move and makes sure nobody can see another hand. Bots fill the empty seats, so the game starts right away even when the table is not full.

What makes this Makao different

Instead of flat cards on a green background you get a 3D table with real wood, velvet cloth and cream cards that fly in arcs. The sounds are recordings of real cards, and the music has its own switch under the pause button. The game has a light and a dark look, ten languages, and experience levels for every game you finish.
