How many ships are there in Battleship?
In the version played on klyo each player has 10 ships that cover 20 squares in total:
- one four square ship,
- two three square ships,
- three two square ships,
- four one square ships.
How do you place the ships?
A ship is a straight line of squares, horizontal or vertical. Ships may not touch, neither along a side nor at a corner, so every ship has a ring of empty water around it. The grid is labelled with letters from A to J and numbers from 1 to 10, so each square has a name, such as B7.
How do you shoot, and when do you shoot again?
Players take turns naming a square on the opponent's grid. The answer is miss, hit, or hit and sunk when the last square of a ship is hit. After a miss the turn passes to your opponent, and after a hit you shoot again. The squares around a sunk ship are certainly empty, because ships never touch.
How do you win at Battleship?
The first player to sink all 10 enemy ships wins.
- Hunt the four square ship first: fire at every fourth square along diagonals, and none of its positions can hide.
- After a hit, try the four neighbouring squares, and once you have two hits in a line, keep going along it.
- Do not fire next to a sunk ship; those squares are empty.
- Spread your own ships irregularly, including along the edges.
